The Biscuit Beggars
Prospecting for gold in Colorado was a rough life for both prospectors and burros in the 1800s. During the harsh mountain winters when mining operations ceased prospectors often abandoned their hardworking burros. By the 1900s the free-roaming burros would wonder into town begging for biscuits and flapjacks knowing they could get an easy handout especially by the children. To this day it is not uncommon to see wild friendly curious burros lined up, heading to town to beg for a handout.
This artwork features a scenic view with several donkeys placed within a landscape. In the foreground, a winding dirt path leads from the bottom of the painting upwards to the left-hand side, on which five donkeys are depicted in various postures of walking or observing. The donkeys are rendered with a good level of detail and realism, imbued with shades of brown and distinguished by their characteristic long ears and expressive faces.
The landscape splits into two primary sections at roughly the center of the composition. To the right, there is an expansive sky dominated by hues of blue, streaked with white and darker shades that suggest cloud cover. The horizon below the sky shows a range of snow-capped mountains, suggesting a high-altitude environment.
To the left of the mountains, there is a field of bright yellow, indicating a meadow or flowering area, which adds a vibrant contrast to the cooler tones of the mountains and sky. In the distance, within this yellow field, a small structure, a house, is visible, accompanied by trees and other vegetation.
The artwork effectively contrasts the immediate curiosity of the donkeys on the path with the vastness and tranquility of nature in the background, creating a sense of harmony between the wildlife and the landscape. The painting seems to capture a quiet moment in what could be a rural, mountainous setting.
The original oil painting is 40"H x 30"W x 1.5"D on gallery wrap canvas.
